The Echo Chamber Chronicles: Noddy Penman Investigates (Sort Of)

Our ever popular “In other news column”, its popular because at least one person read it….

By Noddy Penman, Senior Repeater of Things Said Loudly

In a stunning display of journalistic neutrality (read: passivity), Noddy Penman sat down with Cllr Wayne Fitzgerald to discuss PCRFM’s rent-free arrangement. Armed with nothing but a notepad and an unwavering commitment to not asking follow-up questions, Noddy captured every word like a court stenographer with a caffeine deficiency.

“We are a not-for-profit… by law and statute, we cannot make a profit,” said Fitzgerald.
“Sounds airtight,” nodded Noddy, scribbling furiously without checking Companies House.

Community Benefit? Absolutely!
When told the building was refurbished in a deprived area, Noddy clutched his heart and whispered, “How noble.” He didn’t ask for a Service Level Agreement, outcomes data, or any pesky evidence. After all, paint on walls is proof enough of social transformation.

“Everyone’s Doing It” — The Normalisation Gambit
Fitzgerald claimed many groups get free rent. Noddy, ever the trusting soul, didn’t ask for names, records, or comparisons. “If it’s said with confidence,” he reasoned, “it must be true.”

Dilapidation Justification
“The building was falling apart,” Fitzgerald lamented. Noddy nodded so hard his press pass fell off. He didn’t mention Section 123 of the Local Government Act — mostly because he thought it was a bus route.

Emotional Appeals: Journalism Kryptonite
“I lie awake at night thinking about bills,” Fitzgerald confessed. Noddy wiped a tear and forgot entirely about governance, oversight, or public accountability. “This man suffers,” he wrote, “and suffering is the highest form of truth.”

Conflict of Interest? What Conflict?
When asked about Fitzgerald’s dual role as councillor and radio director, Noddy responded, “He declared it, so it’s fine.” He didn’t ask about recusal, monitoring, or ethics. In fact, he didn’t ask anything at all.

Final Thoughts from Noddy:
“Some say journalism is about holding power to account. I say it’s about holding a microphone and nodding politely. If you want scrutiny, go read a blog.”
