A man whose dangerously out of control dog bit a 13-year-old girl and killed a cat has been handed a criminal behaviour order (CBO).

Paul Wells, 58, of Ackerman Gardens, Eaton Socon, was spoken to by police following an incident in Eaton Socon on 9 July last year.

His dog, a lurcher, had attacked the girl who was holding the cat, biting her on the hand.

She then dropped the cat, which was attacked by the dog.

Wells admitted owning the dog and not keeping it under control.

A similar incident where the dog killed another cat was reported to the council just months earlier.

5 year CBO handed out

The dog was immediately seized by police and Wells was handed a five-year CBO at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court last week (31 March).

The order bans Wells from owning or taking responsibility for a dog and states he must allow police to search his home address to check he is adhering to the order.

Sergeant Lee Steeden said: “This was a truly horrific incident for the girl involved and her beloved pet cat.

“I’m pleased this order has been served and Wells will be prevented from owning or being in charge of a dog for the foreseeable future.”

Executive councillor for customer and transactional services, Cllr Stephen Ferguson said: “This was a horrible incident for the girl involved and we are very happy to have attained a positive result for the victim.

“We recognise the harm that his behaviour has had on the community and we will continue to enforce the conditions of the CBO.

Committed to safety

“We are committed to maintaining Huntingdonshire as a safe place to live, work and visit by helping to reduce levels of crime, disorder, anti-social behaviour and the fear of crime in the district.

“We would like to encourage residents to come forward and report breaches to us so we can investigate and take prompt action.”
