Drivers using the A47 face delays and a diversion this weekend with the closure by National Highways of the westbound carriageway between Hardwick Roundabout and Pullover Roundabout in King’s Lynn from Saturday night.

The westbound road will be closed from 8pm on Saturday 15 March to 5am on Monday 17 March “for essential repairs” to the River Great Ouse bridge, after it was damaged in a crash.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “We are carrying out most of the work overnight to keep any disruption to a minimum. Please allow more time to complete your journey and check your route before travelling.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding while we carry out these essential bridge repairs.”

Facebook, where National Highways has also posted details of the closure, has found answers to questions such as the best way from Hunstanton to Peterborough.

“A10 to Downham Market then rejoin the A47 from there – if you go on Google maps it will tell you,” says one post.

Another wrote, “To be honest you should just follow the diversion. Looks like it’s only on one side so heading there just go as usual.

“On the way back, the diversion will take you down the A10 at the Hardwick roundabout. You’ll end up round the back of Downham Market. You’ll turn right and you’ll find yourself on the A1122 which will take you to Wisbech and you’ll find yourself can rejoin the A47.It will be busy though.”

One other suggestion was that “if going too Peterborough, Long Sutton best to go Wisbech Road.”

National Highways responded to the questioner who asked: “Why does the road need to be closed from the Hardwick roundabout to the Saddlebow roundabout? There is a big Speedway meeting at King’s Lynn arena on Sunday and the Saddlebow roundabout will be busy as the A47 is the main route to the stadium.

National Highways replied: “We have looked at alternatives. However, opening up this section would mean traffic going westbound along the A47 from Hardwick, to be turned around at Saddlebow to go back eastwards along the A47 to join the official diversion route down the A10.

“We believe there is a suitable, short route for speedway bound traffic to run though Kings Lynn to the track. Thank you.”
