A day of uncertainty ended late afternoon yesterday when bomb disposal experts agreed the ‘bomb’ found in a Wisbech potato factory was harmless.

At about 10.20am police received a 999 call from staff at Lamb Weston in Weasenham Lane, Wisbech, after they found this object at their potato processing plant!

“Concerned it looked like the head of a missile from either WW1 or WW2, officers from our response and neighbourhood teams attended,” said a Cambridgeshire police spokesperson.

“Nearby roads were closed, along with some business being evacuated while a cordon was put in place.”

Specialists from Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) were quickly on their way to Wisbech.

“The EOD were called out who assessed the object and confirmed it is the nose of a WW2 practice bomb,” said Fenland police spokesperson.

“It’s now been taken away by the EOD to be disposed of.

“Roads are now back open.”

Police had earlier put up a 200m at the factory – which is close to Cromwell Road – and closed the residents and advised residents to avoid the area.
