A by-election will be held to elect two new district councillors for Longstanton ward after two district councillors stood down.

The resignations of Sarah Cheung-Johnson and Alex Malyon mean that a South Cambridgeshire District Council by-election will be held on Thursday 3 November 2022.

Cllr Cheung-Johnson said: “As many of you will know we both have young children and have also continued to work.

“I work for the university and Alex as a nurse in the NHS, alongside being district councillors.

“We have reluctantly come to the conclusion that we can no longer balance the considerable pressures and workload involved in being a councillor for this growing area with these and other family and work commitments.”

She added: “We will continue to assist the excellent work of the Liberal Democrats in our communities as well as to fight for a more open, more just country.”

Cllr Malyon said that representing the ward for the past five years had been “one of the greatest privileges I could have imagined”.

The Longstanton ward covers Longstanton, Northstowe and Oakington and Westwick.

Whoever is elected on 3 November will represent the ward until May 2026, when all the seats on South Cambridgeshire District Council will be up for election again.

Anyone interested in standing for election is urged to visit www.electoralcommission.org.uk where they will be able to download and print a nomination form.

Nomination forms must be handed in to the council’s Cambourne offices (between 9am and 4pm) on any working day from Thursday 29 September 2022, but by 4pm on Friday 7 October 2022.

Candidates must be aged 18 or over and be British or a citizen of a member country of the European Union or Commonwealth.

They must either be registered to vote in South Cambridgeshire, have either lived or worked in the district for the whole of the last 12 months, or have been the owner or tenant of a home in the district for at least one year.

Nomination papers are also available from South Cambridgeshire District Council’s elections team on elections@scambs.gov.uk or 01954 713 000. More information about the poll can be found at www.scambs.gov.uk/elections

Anyone interested in standing for election for a political party must contact the party’s local office directly.

South Cambridgeshire District Council’s chief executive and returning officer, Liz Watts, said: “District councillors work hard to represent the views of their communities. It is a straightforward process to stand for election, so if you want to know more, please get in touch as soon as possible.
