The ribbon has been cut to mark completion of a new Cambridge junction to celebrate “better and safer journeys”. The event took place at a junction on Milton Road, Cambridge, as the Cambridge Greater Partnership (GCP) scheme nears completion.

GCP chair Cllr Elisa Meschini was joined by residents, councillors, Camcycle, Cambridge Living Streets and the Cambridge Sustainable Travel Alliance as she cut a ribbon to mark the completion of the new Cycle Optimised Protected Signals (CYCLOPS) junction at Milton Road/King’s Hedges Road on Friday.

“The CYCLOPS junction – the second of its kind in Cambridge – provides smooth, segregated paths so people can walk, wheel or cycle with more confidence, while improving safety for all users of this busy junction in the north of the city,” said a GCP spokesperson.

Cllr Meschini said: “Whether you’re commuting to work, shopping with friends, attending fun family activities after school, or if you’re journeying back home, you’ll likely travel along this key route in and out of our city.

“This junction unlocks a quicker, easier and – most importantly – safer route for bicycles, buses, and pedestrians as it filters the traffic.

“Given that works are almost near completion on the project, we’d like to thank the Milton Road community for their patience and understanding whilst we carry out these works.

“We’re very grateful for everyone’s input on the scheme: your feedback and insight since the project’s very beginning, to now being largely delivered, is very much appreciated.

“Thank you for the contributions you have made, and I look forward to seeing the difference it’ll make to anyone catching a bus, walking to the city, or cycling to work.”

The GCP spokesperson added: “The new junction features two rain gardens, which are designed to manage runoff rainwater from hard surfaces, so the excess water doesn’t gather or collect on the road.

“A total of four rain gardens will be delivered along Milton Road, increasing biodiversity in the area.

“This month, the last of the 14 of the Copenhagen crossings on the scheme will be delivered.”

The GCP says that once complete, the Milton Road project will provide “new bus lanes, improved junctions and enhanced walking and cycling links to significantly improve journeys for everyone – helping to cut congestion and improve air quality”.
