Peterborough is lighting up in red, white and blue for the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Victory in Europe Day occurred on May 8, 1945, when Germany surrendered to the Allied Forces leading to widespread celebrations signifying the end of World War II in Europe.

Peterborough Cathedral and Queensgate will be among the iconic buildings lit up, while many of the city’s other buildings will be decked in patriotic bunting.

Bridge Street will also turn red, white and blue, and the Union Flag will be raised on the morning outside the Town Hall.

There will later be a civic service at 9.30pm with a proclamation from the town crier and the lighting of a beacon.

Singers will be performing throughout the day to entertain shoppers, courtesy of Queensgate, with shops also decorated to mark the special anniversary.

City College Peterborough will be marking VE Day in true vintage style – staff and learners will enjoy a vintage tea party, and the celebrations will include a lunchtime sing-along, a themed quiz, and a photo booth with props for some keepsake snaps.

Classes will also join in with VE Day-themed activities across subjects including maths, history, and creative sessions.

Peterborough Central Library will have a book display of second world war related books on display, as well as games and craft activities.

There are also a number of street and tea parties planned across the city – to let us know if your street, shop or community centre is participating, email market@peterborough.gov.uk

“It’s a moment to learn about a significant part of our shared history, to understand the sacrifices made, and to celebrate the resilience of those who came before us. By connecting the past to the present, we create meaningful opportunities for people of all ages to learn, reflect, and be inspired.”

Verity Swinscoe–Wigmore, Marketing & Events Co-ordinator at Queensgate Shopping Centre said: “We’re thrilled to bring the community together for a special celebration at Queensgate. It’s a chance to commemorate the 80th Anniversary for VE Day. We cannot wait to welcome everyone to the centre on 8 May.”

Peterborough Cathedral, Head of marketing and communications Paul Stainton said: “VE Day is a time to remember the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of those who fought for peace and freedom. As a place of prayer, remembrance, and community, Peterborough Cathedral stands as a symbol of hope and unity.

“By lighting the cathedral in red, white, and blue, we honour the legacy of those who served, offer prayers for peace, and invite our community to join us in reflecting on this significant moment in history.

“It is through such visible acts of remembrance that we ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten and that the values they fought for continue to guide us today.”

Peterborough City Council Head of Safer Communities Clair George said: “Our city will stand proud marking the anniversary of VE Day.

“The raising of the flag, and the lighting of the beacon outside our town hall, are always poignant and thoughtful moments of reflection on those who gave their lives, and we would welcome those who want to attend and pay their respects.”
