Four men were arrested last night (Tuesday) in connection with the break-ins of more than 20 lorries at Cambridge services. The service area – four miles out of Cambridge and off the A14 towards Huntingdon – is one of the biggest of its kind in the region and popular with motorists and lorry drivers.

Cambridge Police announced the arrests in a statement this morning.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire police said the four suspects “remain in custody while investigations are ongoing.

“Our patrols across service stations will continue as we know that lorry thieves are often part of organised criminal gangs”.

The services offer a food court with outlets such as Pizzaluxe, Costa, McDonald’s, Fresh, KFC, West Cornwall Pasty Co, El Mexicana and Chopstix.

It also provides parking areas for cars, trucks, caravans, and coaches as well as Electric Vehicle Charging Points.

There is also an 81-bedroom hotel on site.

Police issued a reminder to lorry drivers of their 8-point guide to keeping their trucks safe:

1: Keep your vehicle and cab securely locked at all times. Remove keys whenever the vehicle is left unattended.
2: Park in designated car parks or services.

3: Try to park in a way that prevents access to the rear doors. Consider parking with loading doors close to another vehicle or wall.

4: When returning to an unattended vehicle, always check signs for tampering.

5: If you realise a theft is taking place, don’t leave the safety of your vehicle. Lock the doors, start the engine, switch on the lights and if necessary, sound the horn to attract attention.

6: Avoid talking about the loads and routes with other drivers or customers.

7: Protect documents such as shipping orders and consignment notes.

8: In an emergency or if you spot any criminal or suspicious behaviour, contact the police on 999
