A glass door in the main entrance of the historic medieval south porch of St John’s Church, Peterborough, was smashed last night during an attempted robbery.

“We are sad to report that staff and volunteers at St John’s Church in Peterborough City Centre have been picking up the pieces today following a break-in last night,” said the vicar of Peterborough, the Revd Michelle Dalliston.

“One of the glass doors in the main entrance via the historic medieval South Porch was smashed to gain access in an apparent attempt to steal cash.

“As no monies are left in the building overnight this needless vandalism has now caused a significant amount of damage which will be very expensive to repair”.

She said: ‘We are so sad this has happened causing such pointless and costly damage to this beautiful and historic building.

“We are here to welcome people in to St John’s which has always been at the heart of the life of the city for services and cultural events, concerts and family activities.”

The Rev Dalliston added: “As a Community Support Hub we offer help and support to people in all kinds of need or difficulty, so this needless destruction is really disappointing and causes unnecessary stress and work for our small team.

“We will continue to be open this week as normal and nothing will deter us from being there for everyone in our city.’

She said that if anyone wishes to contribute to the Repair Fund to help St John’s continue to open their doors please contact the parish office at office@peterborough-stjohns.org.uk or contact here (Revd Michelle) at vicar@peterborough-stjohns.org.uk.
