‘Out of control’ Oxford man assaults 7 police officers in Cambridge

Seven police officers were kicked, spat at, and verbally abused by a 43-year-old man arrested after hitting out a member of the public with a metal pole.

Police described the actions of Michael Roberts as a “violent rampage”.

Detective Constable Matthew Lander said: “Roberts behaviour was out of control.

“Nobody knew what he was capable of doing that day.

“This case also highlights the often-daily abuse and violence people working in the emergency services are faced with.

“It is completely unacceptable, and we’re pleased that justice has been served.”

At Cambridge Crown Court on Friday (8 September), Roberts, of Temple Road, Oxford, was sentenced to two years and five months in prison.

He pleaded guilty to seven counts of assaulting an emergency worker, racially aggravated assault, and affray.

Members of the public called police on 24 June reporting Roberts was in Mill Road, Cambridge, armed with a metal pole.

He struck one person with the pole and punched another person to attempted to intervene.

He was arrested and taken into custody where he assaulted the seven police officers by kicking, spitting and being verbally abusive towards them.

He also racially abused another officer.
