Nestled in the heart of Peterborough on a reclaimed coal yard, Railworld Wildlife Haven is a truly unique fusion of heritage, wildlife, community spirit, and hands-on discovery.

What began in 1985 as the “Museum of World Railways” has evolved into a vibrant charity that brings together environmental conservation and railway heritage in a way few other places do.

For families, train enthusiasts, and nature lovers alike, it offers a wealth of experiences:

  • Railway Nostalgia and Innovation: Explore a compact yet captivating collection of railway curiosities, including the distinctive Tracked Hovercraft RTV 31 and the Birmingham AirRail Link Maglev vehicle. Indoors, there’s a sprawling model railway—between 1,500 and 2,000 sq ft—complete with OO-gauge layouts and interactive exhibits

  • An Enchanting Nature Haven: Outdoors, the site becomes a peaceful refuge enhanced with ponds, waterfalls, landscaped gardens, and trails woven through historic railway aqueducts. It’s a place that encourages environmental awareness and connection with the natural world

  • Award-Winning Volunteer-Powered Project: Remarkably, the entire site is brought to life by the dedication of volunteers—no core funding. Their passion has brought in six UK environmental awards and even the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. It’s a testament to what community effort can achieve.
  • Welcoming and Accessible for All: The attraction is conveniently located next to Peterborough Nene Valley Railway Station and just a 15-minute stroll from the main railway station or city centre Facilities include free parking, disabled access and toilets, picnic areas, baby-changing, light refreshments, and it’s dog-friendly (on a lead). Entry prices are very reasonable—e.g., a family of two adults and three children for just £10
