Flood alerts have been issued for the River Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire from Brampton to Earith.

“Flooding is possible in this area,” says the Environment Agency.

Their regional website urges the public to “avoid using low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding.

“Start acting on your flood plan if you have one.

“The Environment Agency Flood Warning System has issued this message based on rising river or tidal levels.”

The agency says the flood alert is River Great Ouse from Brampton to Earith, including Back Brook, Hall Green Brook, Parsons Drove Drain, Swavesey Drain and Wadsbys Folly.

There is also a flood warning for North Bank Road alongside the River Nene, east of Peterborough and west of Dog-in-a-Doublet Sluice

“Flooding is expected in this area,” says the agency.

“This means properties are at risk of flooding. Please take action to protect yourself and your property and monitor local weather and river conditions.

“Avoid contact with, walking or driving through flood water.

The agency says river levels have risen on the Hundred Foot Washes as a result of floodwater moving down the River Great Ouse and into the Hundred Foot Washes. Flooding is affecting Hundred Foot Washes, also known as the Ouse Washes, including the causeways Welney and possibly Sutton Gault.

However, river levels are falling on the Hundred Foot Washes.

The agency warns that “the gauge at Sutton Gault has a fault. River levels will have fallen since 05/01/23 when the causeway at Sutton Gault had approximately 17 centimetres of water on the road.”

At Welney the local Welney Flood Watch reports “a bit of groundhog day at Welney, river levels are at 2.50m this morning.

“Flashing signs were at 20cm/8 inches.”

The Facebook flood group at Welney adds: “Expect the shallow side heading towards Welney to be 4 to 5 inches and that deeper side heading towards Littleport up to 9 inches deep

“Flows across the road are fast, there is still a very strong wind like yesterday 32km with gusts up to 50km is showing on my weather station right now.

“This will create conditions very similar to yesterday so if heading that way be careful, avoid going through if you are not familiar with the road and its flooded conditions.”
