GALLERY: The King at Sandringham on Christmas Day – photographic memory

The first visitors began gathering at 4am and within a few hours a couple of hundred others were waiting in position to get a glimpse of the Royal Family at Sandringham in Norfolk.

It was a long cold wait but many in the crowd – including a local family who had missed the tradition only twice in 12 years – waited excitedly for the Royal party to leave Sandringham House and to make their way to the parish church.

One surprise guest of His Majesty the King was his brother Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, who had been invited to Sandringham at Christmas for the first time in 30 years. She beamed throughout.

St Mary Magdalene Church at Sandringham has been the focal point of the Royal family’s Christmas worship for decades and today was no exception.

Sarah Ferguson was on the admittance list for this symbolic occasion after being invited by the King and Queen.

Even Sarah’s ex-husband, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, joked and smiled with the waiting crowd; none too easy when his life has been turned upside down with a sex scandal and having been stripped of royal duties.

Kate Middleton look resplendent in a navy coat, chatted amiably to visitors, and the King and Queen Camila were in boisterous spirits as they mingled with onlookers.
