Three years after a JustGiving raised £3,146 to help the then publicans keep it open post Covid, the Royal Oak at St Ives – which closed anyway -may be given a new lease of life.

Owners Greene King say they are ready to spend £230,000 on a makeover and get it re-opened if they find the right new tenants.

A brewery spokesperson said they were “ready to invest £230,000 in the pub to transform it into a premium ale house”.

However, the pub company says it needs a publican to operate the pub, which it is yet to find.

The Grade II listed pub was described in the JustGiving appeal as a “lifeline for many people in the community”.

It is one of the oldest pubs in St Ives and is thought to have been established in the 17th century.

Greene King says their investment would be used to improve the pub both inside and outside with new signage, new booth seating, an overhaul of the toilets and revamping of the pub’s open fires.

“We have already organised for designers to illustrate its planned makeover of the pub, showing how The Royal Oak would be transformed into a modern and premium ale house at the heart of St Ives,” said a brewery spokesperson.

“We hope to find a local publican soon to come in and run the pub as a tenant.”

Greene King says the successful applicant would need to be local as the pub does not have live-in accommodation. They hope the re-opened pub will create up to 10 jobs.
