Cambridge City Foodbank has received a record number of hampers donated as part of its Christmas Hamper Appeal, receiving over 910. The foodbank says Christmas 2023 will be its busiest since its inception 13 years ago.

The hampers include essential food and hygiene items, as well as some Christmas treats, which will be distributed to those in need through the Foodbank’s partner agencies.

Cambridge City Foodbank CEO, Steve Clay, said: “Throughout 2023, the support that the people of Cambridge has shown our Foodbank has been nothing short of inspiring.

“Despite the financial difficulties that we are all facing, residents and local businesses in Cambridge have always been there to lend a helping hand and to donate vital supplies.

“For our Christmas Hamper Appeal, we had to achieve a record-breaking number of pledges in order to keep up with the rising number of children and families we’re supporting this Christmas.

“We simply cannot thank the public enough for their help. Your support is going to make such a positive difference to the lives of so many at a difficult time.”

He said Cambridge City Foodbank has faced unprecedented need for its service this year and has provided food for over 8,900 adults and nearly 5,000 children.

Mr Clay added: “December is historically the busiest month for the Foodbank, and as the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite household budgets throughout the UK, the Foodbank expect this Christmas to be its busiest since its inception in 2010. “

In addition to the Christmas hampers, Cambridge City Foodbank has again partnered with Cambridge Sustainable Food and Cambridge City Council to provide families with fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as a toy or a game to be enjoyed during the festive period.

While the target has been reached for hamper pledges, further toy and game donations are still required. If you wish to contribute to the appeal, you can do so here: https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/christmas-gifts-for-vulnerable-families.
