Families in Peterborough are set to benefit from a transformative £1.3 million funding boost as part of the government’s Start for Life initiative, aimed at providing crucial support to parents and young children from pregnancy up to the age of two.

The funding, announced for the 2025/26 financial year, will enhance the services offered through Peterborough’s Family Hub network.

These hubs serve as vital one-stop shops for families, offering support with:

– Mental health services to foster positive early relationships between parents and their babies.

– Infant feeding support, including breastfeeding advice and guidance.

– Parenting classes to equip families with skills and confidence for the early years.

– Access to information and services tailored to the needs of local families.

Peterborough MP Andrew Pakes said: “Family Hubs provide invaluable support for the children and parents. This extra investment shows the government’s commitment to ensuring every child has the best start in life, regardless of background.

“The early years are critical for a child’s development, and this funding will empower families in our community with the support and resources they need to thrive.”

The announcement was also welcomed by Peterborough City councillor Katy Cole, Cabinet member for children’s services.

“Children’s early years lay the foundation for future health, education, and success. However, many parents have faced barriers accessing these vital services,” she said.

“With this funding, Peterborough aims to close these gaps, providing comprehensive, accessible, and community-focused support.”

This funding is part of a broader £126 million national initiative to help families in areas with high levels of deprivation. The Start for Life program seeks to improve long-term outcomes for children, addressing challenges such as school readiness and health inequalities.
