A pioneering music education programme designed for people with learning disabilities is being launched at The Salvation Army in Histon near Cambridge later this month.

The Music Man Project empowers its students by teaching them to sing, play instruments and perform. With a mission to unlock musical potential and build confidence, the program has touched the lives of many, fostering joy at special events including a performance at the Royal Albert Hall.

Sessions will run in partnership with The Salvation Army’s Enabled community, and will welcome local adults with disabilities, with support from their carers.

The launch session on 28th February will be free to attend and will feature a visit and special performances from David Stanley, founder, and CEO of The Music Man Project with the Global Ambassadors, experienced and enthusiastic members of existing Music Man Project groups.

Sessions will be led by Nicola New who said: “I am so excited to bring The Music Man Project to Histon. We believe in the power of music to break down barriers, inspire creativity, and bring people together.”

Major Georgina Symons is one of the leaders of The Salvation Army at Histon and said she can’t wait to start the sessions.

She said: “For almost 10 years now I have been part of The Salvation Army’s enabled community and have grown to love being part of this beautiful community of people. I have received so much more in blessings than I could ever give. Music is a huge part of my life, and being able to share in music making in this way brings a huge smile to my face and my heart.”

David Stanley said he is very proud each time a new Music Man project is launched.

He said: “Every week, Music Man students join together to sing, play, and dance in Salvation Army churches across the UK. They express themselves, they listen, and they laugh.

“They’re musicians with purpose and pride, and part of our great big musical family. From the first workshop to performances at the Royal Albert Hall, I’m deeply humbled by the journey we’ve been on together and grateful to God for the faith shown in me by the Salvation Army.”

Music Man Project Cambridgeshire will take place from 10.30am to 12pm on Fridays. The charge is £5 per session, with no charge for carers. They are being held at The Salvation Army, Impington Lane, Histon, CB24 9LT.
