Prospective Parliamentary candidate Daniel Laycock has quit both the Green Party and St Neots Town Council. In a torrent of abuse on @X (formerly Twitter) the openly gay councillor hurled abuse directly at the party and the town council.

“I’m done with the homophobic, transphobic, and queer-phobic toxicity on St Neots Town Council,” he declared.

“It seems that many are out to destroy the very existence of the LGBTIQA+ community and the threat of climate change – both are fundamentally coexisting with another.

“If Ind, former UKIP/Tories cannot understand the existence of LGBTQ+ people, they are not worth my time. F**k them.”

For good measure he added: “Now I can speak my mind finally. The Green Party is f**k*d.”

He refers to a court case involving the former deputy leader of the Green Party who claims he was forced out due to his “gender-critical” beliefs.

The Green Party has denied all allegations and says it “remains proud of its focus on equality and human rights for all and our support for the trans community”.

Laycock tweeted that he believes the outcome will result in the Green Party becoming bankrupt “and will need to reform a new party on some of another”.

He also claimed that “on another note, St Neots Town Council will be in court in the new year for discrimination – in every way” before alleging discrimination under the Equality Act.

Cllr Rob Simonis, the Mayor of St Neots, told CambsNews today: “Given the threat of legal action against the town council in the tweet it would be inappropriate to provide a comment at this time.

“The council will seek to understand from Cllr Laycock the specifics of his allegations in the new year.”

In 2019 Laycock stood for the Green Party in the General Election (polling 3.8 per cent of the votes) and is shown on the Huntingdonshire Green Party website as being their candidate for Huntingdon at the forthcoming General Election.

He said last year after being selected that “with a Green MP for the Huntingdon constituency, we’ll work to help struggling families as we continue to face a cost-of-living crisis, tackle the climate crisis, work for investment in renewable energy, for an improved and better education system, connected public transport and a future for all”.

Laycock was elected as councillor in May 2022 for the Eynesbury ward and sits on St Neots Town Council.

At the first town council meeting he successfully proposed the setting up of an environment committee to tackle the council’s commitment to reaching net zero by 2030. He was elected the chair of the new committee.

He has also pledged to “stand up for LGBIQA+ people in the constituency and Cambridgeshire. We need see better trans healthcare, safe spaces for the community and young people. With the rise in hate towards LGBTIQA+ people we need better legislation to prosecute hate crimes.”

“Huntingdon needs an MP that will be not only be visible but one who will fight for every single resident, in their corner every single day.”
