A Peterborough man who waged a campaign of abuse and intimidation against his own mother has been sent to prison.

Tamour Nawaz, 22, smashed conservatory windows with a brick at the home they shared in Atherstone Avenue, Peterborough, because he felt she was ignoring him.

He also threw dinner she had cooked for him on the floor and then demanded she clear it up.

On another occasion he went upstairs where his mother was trying to sleep and pulled the duvet off her, demanding she get up and cook him food.

Officers went to arrest Nawaz on 11 June. However, he reacted aggressively, lashing out at two officers, and kicking them repeatedly before putting one of them in a headlock

The officers used PAVA spray to subdue him, and he was arrested.

On Monday, at Peterborough Crown Court, Nawaz was jailed for one year and 30 weeks after admitting several offences, including controlling and coercive behaviour in a family relationship, two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker and driving without insurance.

He was also disqualified from driving for three years after being found guilty following a trial of dangerous driving and driving whilst disqualified in relation to a police pursuit in February.

Detective Constable Maisy Napier, who investigated, said: “Nawaz continually demanded food, money and a phone and consistently lost his temper when his mother didn’t act immediately on his demands.

“No mother should be subjected to this kind of abuse – fearing daily intimidation from their son. Coercive control is a criminal offence, and we take reports of it seriously.

“This kind of behaviour has long-lasting effects on victims as well as the impact at the time. This case highlights that coercive and controlling behaviour is exactly that, irrespective of the relationship dynamic it occurs within.

“We encourage anyone who is a victim of any kind of domestic abuse to contact police or call the national domestic violence helpline on 0808 2000 247.”
