A young player died yesterday (Saturday) during a home game at Wisbech Rugby Club.

Woodbridge RUF posted: “The sport we love can be so cruel, prayers to the family and club,” was one of hundreds of tributes tonight from across East Anglia and the rest of the country.

The Wisbech team were at home to Diss Rugby Club 1XV whose Facebook page was inundated tonight with tributes after the match, of course, was abandoned.

One spectator posted: “Rugby is the best game in the world, the respect and the sportsmanship is something you never see in any other sport out there, but to watch Wisbech 1st team play today, a club I love and to see a young die on the pitch from a 50/50 challenge is one of the hardest things I have ever seen.

“It puts the physicality of the game in perspective; we all love the game, but today the game has lost a great young player, and our thoughts go out to his family.”

The tributes were piling in thick and fast.

“Heartfelt condolences from myself and Huntingdon Rugby Club. Our thoughts are with everyone involved today, players, supporters, and families. Incredibly sad news, “said one.

Spalding RFC said: “We want to send our deepest condolences to our close neighbours Wisbech and to the family of a fallen player while doing something he loved. We stand with you Wisbech Rugby Club.”

Mersea Island sent “condolences to family, friends and all involved on behalf of Mersea Island RFC£.

“Our thoughts are with you all. Deepest condolences,” said St Ives RUFC.

St Neots Rugby Club told their Wisbech counterparts: “Our thoughts are with everyone involved today. Our rugby family sends our condolences and love”.

Dereham Rugby Club said: “thoughts are with you all” and Woodbridge RUFC offered “condolences on behalf of Eastern Counties Rugby Union and from the wider Rugby family – all are desperately sad at the news”.

Peterborough Lions RFC wrote: “Our thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to all involved at Wisbech Rugby Club after hearing the devastating news.”

Scores of other tributes continue to pour in to the Wisbech club.
