Stagecoach says it welcomes re-opening a key section of the Guided Busway, between Cambridge Railway Station and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus that will see journey times between both return to less than 5 minutes.

The route has been closed since February 12 to allow new safety measures to be installed.

“Our contractors have been working seven days a week to get this work completed as quickly as possible and involved removing the existing temporary fence, taking out the kerbs and installing the new fence,” said a spokesperson for Cambridgeshire County Council.

“To reduce inconvenience to bus passengers, cyclists and pedestrians and keep the Guided Busway and the maintenance track open wherever possible, the work took place in sections.”

A Stagecoach spokesperson said re-opening the section will see “journey times between the Biomedical Campus and Cambridge Railway Station radically reduced to less than 5 minutes.

“Buses on this route no longer need to travel along Hills Road, a journey that can take over 30 minutes at peak times because of congested traffic.

“The Busway A links Trumpington Park & Ride and the hospitals at one end to destinations including Histon and Impington, Longstanton, Swavesey and St Ives at the other; and with one change to Huntingdon, March and Chatteris.”

Darren Roe, managing director of Stagecoach East, said: “We are delighted for our customers that this important piece of our local transport network is now fully open again.

“The Busway is a key part of our wider network in Cambridge, where we pride ourselves on our value.

“A 28 Day MegaRider allows adults unlimited travel in the Town Zone for just £2.72, and the youth price is only £1.93. Likewise, a Large Group ticket allows five people unlimited travel for just £2.40 each.

“The Busway also offers outstanding value as customers can take advantage of the government’s £2 single fare cap scheme until at least the end of June 2024.”
